Our Current Operations

Sierra Academy of Aeronautics offers FAA-approved Part 141 and Part 61 courses for individuals interested in obtaining their Private Pilot License, Instrument Ratings, and Commercial Pilot License. Ground courses and flight training are designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in the aviation industry. We have self examination authority for private pilots license and instrument ratings, meaning we do not have to wait for a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) to be available to perform students' check rides, which can speed up the process of going through courses. Our Flight, Maintenance, Admission, and Business Departments are dedicated to the success of every single student!

FAA Part 141 vs
Part 61 Flight
Training: What's
the Difference?

When you research flight schools in the United States. you'll often see "Part 141" and "Part 61." These refer to different sets of FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) regulations that flight schools and instructors can follow. Both paths lead to the same pilot licenses- but the structure, efficiency, and recognition can be very different.

PART 141 TRAINING (OUR PROGRAM)

  • Structured Curriculum- The FAA approves every syllabus, lesson plan, and training stage. You follow a step-by-step program designed for professional results.

  • Lower Minimum Flight Hours- Due to the structured training, students can qualify for a Commercial Pilot License in as few as 199 hours (compared to 250 hours under Part 61)

  • Airline-Oriented Environment- Ideal for international students who want a direct path to an airline career. Progress checks and standardization ensure consistent, high-quality training.

  • Visa Eligible- Only FAA Part 141 schools can issue the I-20 form required for international students to obtain an M-1 student visa.

Part 61 TRAINING

  • Flexible & Instructor-Led- No FAA-approved curriculum is required. Individual instructors can tailor training to each student.

  • Higher Hour Requirements- You need at least 250 hours of flight time to qualify for a Commercial Pilot License

  • Better for Hobbyists- Great if your goal is a Private Pilot License for personal flying, or if you want a more casual, flexible training schedule.
